Bhante Cunda, born in Malaysia as Kim Yee Chan, moved to Perth at age 4 and split his time between there and Christmas Island, where he discovered Buddhism at 23 through Ajahn Brahm’s meditation tapes. After visiting Bodhinyana Monastery, he volunteered there for 11 years, earning the nickname “Monk-anic.” Despite initial parental opposition, he ordained in 2008, joining the monastic community, and his family later accepted his decision.
Bhante Bodhidhaja, born in Switzerland as Nicolas Vrticka, encountered Buddhism early on through a neighbor. He became a teacher and chose social work instead of military service. At 21, he temporarily ordained in India under Acharya Buddharakhita, adopting the name Bodhidhaja. From 2006, he practiced and served in various monastic communities, eventually joining BSWA in Perth in 2010 as an Anagarika, and receiving full ordination in 2012 under Ajahn Brahm. He remains part of the BSWA monastic community.
