Growing up\, he was interested in business and computers. A spiritual vocation seemed extremely unlikely. However\, in high school\, he was given a book as a joke\, which contained teachings from an assortment of religions. Browsing through it\, he came to a description of the four noble truths. After reading the four noble truths\, he was converted. \nIn high school and university\, Bhante attended the Toronto Zen Buddhist Temple. He eventually moved in and started training part-time to become a priest. In 2006\, he took up full-time training at the Temple. However\, an attraction to Theravada Buddhism pulled him towards the Thai Forest Tradition. He attended a day-long retreat with Ajahn Viradhammo in 2007. At the retreat\, he learned about the newly-established Tisaraṇa Buddhist Monastery. He found his way to Tisaraṇa and was ordained as an anagārika in 2008. \nIn 2010\, Bhante Joe was ordained as a bhikkhu with Ajahn Viradhammo as his preceptor. Bhante trained at Tisaraṇa\, with one year in Thailand\, until 2015. In 2015\, his teacher released him from dependence. He spent six months at a monastery in California and then returned to Canada to stay in the Toronto area. \nBhante Joe stayed in the Toronto area from 2016 until 2019. In Toronto\, he associated with the Toronto Mahavihara and the West End Buddhist Temple. In November 2019\, he came to Sri Lanka\, where he currently resides.

SUMMARY:Develop Insight in Space | 6 day Meditation Retreat | Ajahn Vimokkha
DESCRIPTION:Open to BSV Members & Non-Members\nThe retreat is fully booked. Waitlist now open.\n \n\n\n\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher:\nMedhino Bhikkhu\, Ph.D.\, more widely known as the Venerable Vimokkha\, is the abbot of Wat Pipphalivanaram\, founded by the Great Master Kassapamuni in Rayong Province\, Thailand. Ven. Vimokkha excels at teaching mindfulness and vipassana insight meditation with techniques blending lessons from Thailand’s great masters with his own self-discoveries. Ven. Vimokkha’s teachings are best described as accessible and pragmatic. They are aimed at an immediate direct experience of the nature of mind. His palpable power\, charisma\, and cheerful encouragement make him a truly unique master well-suited for these times. \nVen. Vimokkha pioneered a workplace mindfulness meditation training program used by companies and local government agencies. He travels widely to teach mindfulness meditation in accordance with the four foundations of mindfulness in Buddhist context and he has active students throughout the world\, including Thailand\, Malaysia\, Australia\, the United Kingdom\, the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Italy\, Poland\, Hungary\, Ukraine\, Russia\, and the United States. \n\n\n\nAbout the Retreat:\nThe retreat is themed – Develop Insight in Space –The Space Element in the context of the mind and heart is a powerful concept in meditation and mindfulness practices\, providing a way to cultivate spaciousness in both mental and emotional realms\, thereby leading to greater clarity\, peace\, and insight. \nThe Space Element can be visualized as the vastness within which thoughts arise and dissolve. In recognizing that thoughts are just fleeting phenomena within this mental space\, practitioners can develop a sense of detachment from their mental activity\, enabling a reduction in identification with thoughts and helps in understanding that they are not the true self. \nThe mind can be seen as a boundless space where thoughts\, emotions\, and perceptions arise and cease. Thoughts are allowed to arise and cease without attachment\, fostering a deeper awareness of the mind’s impermanent and transient nature. \nThis silent residential retreat consists of walking and sitting meditation practice. There will also be a daily Dhamma Talk and Q&A session. The teachings are sequential during this retreat\, so casual attendance is not possible. Vegetarian lunches will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoom Bond:\nAccommodations for this retreat will be single occupancy \n\nBSV: $410\nNon-Members: $490\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue and Times:\nSanctuary of Stillness (SOS) Meditation Retreat Centre\, 107 Beaches Lane\, Newbury\, AUSTRALIA \n\nParticipants can arrive at SOS from 5:15pm on Fri 2 January and a light supper will be offered at 6:30pm.\nAn introduction and welcome to the retreat will take place at 7:15pm.\nRetreat concludes at 3pm on Wed 7 January.

SUMMARY:The Gift of Peace | Long Weekend Meditation Retreat | Ajahn Mudito
DESCRIPTION:Open to BSV Members & Non-Members\nThe retreat is fully booked. Waitlist now open.\n \n\n\n\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher:\nAjahn Mudito was born in a small village in northern Finland. In his early twenties\, he travelled to the United States\, where he worked in various jobs and later returned to Finland to spend several years working alongside his father in construction. During his time in New York\, his long-standing interest in Buddhism deepened\, and he began meditating with various groups; however\, he struggled to find a teacher whose approach truly resonated with him. \nThis changed when he encountered Ajahn Brahm during a visit to New York to promote Open the Door of Your Heart. The clarity and grounded simplicity of Ajahn Brahm’s teachings had a profound impact on him. In 2010\, he went to Bodhinyana Monastery in Western Australia and ordained as a bhikkhu in 2012. \nAjahn Mudito spent several years at Newbury Buddhist Monastery\, supporting the development of the monastery and meditation centre. In 2024\, he returned to reside at Bodhinyana Monastery. SUMMARY:The Foundations of Mindfulness - Mahasatipatthana Sutta | Pip Ransome
DESCRIPTION:Open to BSV Members & Non-Members\n\nCurrent State: Opening Soon\n\n\n\n \n Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher:\nBorn and growing up in Melbourne\, for thirty years Pip Ransome worked in community development\, fifteen of them alongside the Yorta-Yorta people of northeast Victoria. In 1993 Pip was authorised to teach meditation and the Buddha-Dhamma by highly-esteemed Buddhist nun Venerable Ayya Khema. While maintaining her own practice\, she has taught\, quietly and with diligence\, for over thirty years. She now enjoys a secluded life in a seaside village on the Mornington Peninsula\, Victoria\, while continuing to offer Dhamma. \n\n\n\nAbout the Retreat:\nIntroducing this discourse\, the Buddha said “There is\, monks\, this direct path to the purification of beings\, for the overcoming of sorrow and distress\, for the disappearance of pain and sadness\, for the gaining of the right path\, for the realisation of Nibbana – that is to say the four foundations of mindfulness.” [after Maurice Walshe ‘Thus Have I Heard’]. \nWe also know that the Buddha described his training as “gradual”\, not happening in one retreat’s practice. However\, may we all enjoy\, and make the most of\, this opportunity to practise “directly from the Buddha’s words”\, as Venerable Ayya Khema used to say. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoom Bond:\nAccommodations for this retreat will be single occupancy \n\nBSV: $730\nNon-Members: $810\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVenue and Times:\nSanctuary of Stillness (SOS) Meditation Retreat Centre\, 107 Beaches Lane\, Newbury\, AUSTRALIA \n\nParticipants can arrive at SOS from 5:15pm on Fri 17 Jul and a light supper will be offered at 6:30pm.\nAn introduction and welcome to the retreat will take place at 7:15pm.\nRetreat concludes at 3:00pm on Sun 26 Jul.
