SUMMARY:Webinar: “Beyond mindfulness: The Scientific Examination of Buddhist Practice”
DESCRIPTION:Dialogue between Dr Nicholas Van Dam (The University of Melbourne) & Ajahn Brahm\nModerator: Lydia BrownDate : Thursday\, 3rd Dec’2020\nTime:  6pm Melbourne time (3pm Perth time)Webinar brief:\nOver the past 30 years\, psychological science has embraced one core aspect of Buddhist practice: mindfulness.  However\, there is less clarity about the context in which mindfulness is best situated to facilitate flourishing. Within the broader Buddhist context\, there are numerous other features and a multitude of contemplative practices\, many of which science has largely neglected. In this conversation between senior Buddhist monk Ajahn Brahm and contemplative studies researcher Dr Nicholas Van Dam\, we will explore what lies beyond mindfulness. We will look at how science can better understand contemplative practices originating from Buddhism and what the broader principles and practices might contribute to a life well-lived. We will also explore how science might inform and enrich contemporary Buddhist practice. \nTo attend\, please register here: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/55ni \nAbout the Speakers:\nAjahn Brahm’s Leadership Roles: The Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery in Serpentine\, WA; the Spiritual Director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia; Founding Chair of the Australian Sangha Association; Spiritual Advisor to the Buddhist Society of Victoria; and Spiritual Director of Santi Forest Monastery in New South Wales.\nMore information about Ajahn Brahm is outlined in\nhttps://bswa.org/teachers/ajahn-brahm/ajahn-brahm-bio/ \nDr Nicholas Van Dam\nSenior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology\nDeputy Director | Brain and Mental Health Hub\nMelbourne School of Psychological Sciences\nFaculty of Medicine\, Dentistry\, and Health Sciences\nProposed director for the new centre: The Centre for Contemplative Studies\, The University of Melbourne
